Our latest Sappi Europe ‘Sustainability Highlights’ report has just been published – with good news for our customers

For our Sappi Europe CEO Marco Eikelenboom, “Positive transformation is at the heart of everything we strive for.” A range of telling examples of that transformation can be found in our newly published ‘Sustainability Highlights’ report.

The 12-page report explores in detail some important big wins – such as Sappi Europe increasing its share of renewable and clean energy to a level of more than 64% last year thanks to ongoing decarbonisation projects at several mills. Such projects are lowering the carbon footprint of Sappi mills and the sustainable solutions they produce – meaning that customers using our products also see their own carbon footprint lowered.

Current decarbonisation projects highlighted in the report include Gratkorn mill, where new biomass infrastructure improvements are picking up speed, and Maastricht mill, where a second e-boiler began construction last year.

The new report also highlights steady progress in areas such as water stewardship (with forward-thinking investment in key projects undertaken at our Carmignano and Alfeld mills), working with key partners (including the 4evergreen alliance and World Business Council for Sustainable Development) and raising standards in product safety (by, for example, working alongside Cepi and in collaboration with the chemical industry to standardise data exchange across the value chain).

External assessments and their ratings are an important way to measure sustainability progress and performance against strict benchmarks, and the report points to further good news in this area for Sappi and our customers – not least from globally recognised sustainability ratings platform EcoVadis. For the sixth year in a row, ‘Sustainability Highlights’ notes, Sappi was awarded the highest, platinum medal by EcoVadis – placing us in the top 1% of rated companies.

The progress and projects showcased in the report illustrate the range of ways in which Sappi steps up as a sustainable supplier and partner for all our customers. They also, as Marco Eikelenboom emphasises, “demonstrate what we can do – and how much further we can go.”
